After twenty years of playing in Amsterdam I know this city inside out. The hidden gems, the tourist traps, the places locals actually go. Here is my personal guide to the best nights out in the capital.
For the techno lover
Amsterdam has one of the strongest techno scenes in the world. If you like dark basements and pounding beats, you are spoilt for choice.
Shelter
Underneath the A'DAM Tower on the IJ you will find Shelter, an underground techno mecca with a literally underground location. The acoustics are phenomenal - they have invested seriously in the sound system.
Radion
In a former dental laboratory in Nieuw-West sits Radion - raw, authentic, with programming that runs from experimental electronica to hard techno. The community here is tight; this is not a place for one-time visitors but for regulars who understand the culture.
For the house lover
House was born in Chicago, but Amsterdam has embraced it like no other European city. The scene here is mature, diverse and full of quality.
Chicago Social Club
Named after the birthplace of house, Chicago Social Club is an institution. Leidseplein is chaotic, but the moment you step inside you are in another world. Intimate setting, superior sound, and a focus on pure house.
Canvas
On the seventh floor of the Volkshotel in the east you will find Canvas, with the best view of any club in Amsterdam. By day a bar and restaurant, by evening and night a club with eclectic programming. House, disco, funk - anything groovy.
For a casual night out
Not every night has to end at six in the morning. Sometimes you just want good music, a decent drink, and to be home by midnight.
Pllek
On the IJ in Amsterdam-Noord, built from recycled materials, Pllek is the perfect spot for summer evenings. Live music, DJ sets, and one of the finest views across the water. Come for sunset and stay until dark.
Hannekes Boom
A waterside bar near Central Station that feels like a secret, even though everybody knows about it. Relaxed vibe, live music at weekends, and the option to sit outside until late. Perfect for a first date or a casual drink with friends.
Waterkant
On the Marnixstraat, with a terrace on the water. Waterkant starts as a restaurant and turns into a club as the evening goes on. The music is accessible but tasteful - disco, house, soul.
For the connoisseurs
Some places in Amsterdam are not simply clubs - they are experiences.
Paradiso
The former church on Leidseplein is one of the most beautiful concert venues in the world. Not a nightclub in the traditional sense, but the late-night afterparties following concerts are legendary. The acoustics, the atmosphere, the history - there is nothing like Paradiso.
Melkweg
Right next to Paradiso, in a former dairy factory. More diverse in its programming - from indie to electronic, from hip-hop to experimental. The club nights on Friday and Saturday often sell out.
Bimhuis
For the jazz lover, Bimhuis is the place. On the IJ, with a glass wall looking out over the water. Here you hear world-class jazz and improvised music in an intimate setting.
The hidden gems
These are the places that do not appear in the tourist guides. The places locals go.
BRET
By Sloterdijk station, built out of shipping containers, BRET is an organic restaurant with craft beer by day and a club at weekends. The terrace looks out over greenery they planted themselves, with the industrial skyline of the west behind it. The programming is eclectic and always interesting.
OT301
A squatted former film school in the west, turned into a cultural centre. This is where you find the most experimental programming in the city - from noise to ambient to undefinable electronic experiments.
Garage Noord
Tucked away on an industrial estate in Noord, Garage Noord is a place for the true enthusiast. Small capacity, intimate atmosphere, and a focus on quality over quantity.
Practical tips
After twenty years I have learned a few things about going out in Amsterdam:
Timing
- Clubs open late - Most clubs do not really start until 1-2am. Do not turn up at 23:00, you will be standing there alone.
- Sunday is the new Saturday - Many clubs run their best programmes on Sunday afternoon and evening.
- Weeknights are underrated - Thursday often has the best value for money.
Door policy
Amsterdam clubs have selective doors. This is not snobbery - it is protection of the atmosphere. Here are my tips:
- Do not turn up in big groups (3-4 people maximum)
- Make sure you are sober enough to hold a conversation
- Know the programme - know who is playing and why you are there
- Dress to suit the club, not too casual, not overdressed
- Be friendly to the door staff - they decide everything
"The door is not an obstacle. It is a selection process that protects the atmosphere inside. Respect that."
Getting around
The night bus is your friend. After 1:00 special night lines run across the city. The metro stops around midnight, but the tram runs late on Friday and Saturday nights. And of course: the bike. People in Amsterdam cycle everywhere, including home at five in the morning.
What to avoid
I am not going to name names, but some general rules:
- Warmoesstraat and surroundings - Tourist traps with bad music and overpriced drinks
- Clubs with promoters out on the street - If they have to talk you into it, it is not good enough
- Places offering "DJ requests" - A real club programmes its music, full stop
- Anywhere with bottle service as the main attraction - You are paying for status, not for music
Conclusion
Amsterdam nightlife is diverse, high quality and full of character. Whether you are a seasoned clubber or just after a good night out - there is something for everyone.
My best advice? Be curious. Try new places. Talk to people. And do not forget to dance.
Maybe I will see you on the dancefloor sometime.
